A Night shift for my little pixie and mole

I’m knackered and proud at the same time. After a long night shift to get both costumes finished, it was great to see Lilly’s smile and bright shining eyes when she wore her costume the first time.

Pixie Lilly

I think Ari felt Lilly’s excitement the night before carnival and had a very restless night. Therefore we thought it would be better to leave him sleep. I brought Lilly to the kindergarten and I got really sad that he was going to miss this big day.

Back home I was greeted by a very cheerful little man. We called the kindergarten and asked if it was still possible to bring Ari there so he could take part in the festivities.

We had a small breakfast, got dressed and Ari could also ware his little mole dress to the colorful party.

Little Mole Ari

The original idea included a little shovel. But I somehow forget about it while worrying that all ordered fabrics wouldn’t arrive in time.

Vikings and dragons

Carnival is over and here are the costumes.

Since Ari can’t express his wishes yet, he just wore Lilly’s old dragon costume from last year. He didn’t try to get rid of it, so I take it he liked it. čÖé It isn’t that easy to find a costume for a one year old. He wouldn’t keep a hat on or any other accessories nor would stay any paint in his face for long.

Lilly on the other hand couldn’t decide between being a clown, a blue ghost (wherever this idea comes from) or Wickie. Wickie won but there were only three days left to make the costume. I got started with making the helmet out of papier m├óch├ę (small paper shavings and wallpaper paste). And while this was drying I cut out the small tiles for the scale armor – a bit more than 100. To take a break from cutting the tiles I started with the shirt below the armor. For that I took the shape from a normal shirt from Lilly and made it longer. Though I didn’t think about the different materials. The sample shirt was made out of stretchy jersey but the final shirt was made of normal cotton, so not stretchy at all. In the end Lilly had to suffer a tiny bit to get in. But once the shirt was on, she could move normally. Next day more layers were needed on the helmet plus the horns, more cutting of tiles for the scale armor and a bit finishing of the shirt. On the last day (night) Basti helped me with getting the horns on the helmet and painting it. I sew all the tiles together to create the scale armor. FINISHED at around 2 o’clock in the mooring.┬áMaking Lilly’s costume took quite a few hours but her smile when she wore it made up for it.

Next year I will have to make two complete new costumes. I definitely have to get started earlier than two days before the big day.

Lilly – scale armor: old sample of a very stiff waterproof fabric; shirt: cotton; helmet: news paper, paper towel, wallpaper paste

Ari – dress: jersey plus cardboard for the wings and stuffing for the tail

A very long break

ÔÇŽ it was. Time to get started again. čÖé

Let’s do that with my first project I made with my new sewing machine back in 2010 just a few month after Lilly saw the light of day.
It’s her very own baby blanket:

Baby blanket Lilly

I still quite like the combo of bright blue and orange ┬á– and for my not so girlish girl just the right color.

Materials: cord, blue with orange flowers; fleece, orange
Idea: my own

7 things

Incited by┬áFrau Liebe, from time to time I will show 7 things I have done with my own hands on one day – no matter if for 5 minutes or several hours.

Breakfast with friends after a nice chilled birthday party.

Brunch with family and …

practicing going up and down. A very good activity for a 1 and a half year old while all grown-ups eat. čÖé

baked some cake and …

used the chocolate left over to make some crunchy bits.

jersey stripes

Cut an old shirt into stripes and …

jersey ball

rolled the stripes up to two balls. This took more time than I expected so the planned rug will take its time.

Have a good week everyone.

It’s already a month ago since the last proper post. I really need to get going and post more often here. Though with a newly started business and a very demanding one year old, it’s just more relaxing to read other blogs or watch some videos (while knitting) at the end of the day.

I wanted to start a new ‘tradition’ for this blog by making a monthly recap of all major happenings in our home. Sadly, I just realised I didn’t take that many pictures last month. So the recap will be more text than pix.

First off the start into a new year. We spent our new year together with some friends in Osnabr├╝ck. It’s just so nice and relaxed spending the big day amongst friends at friends. And another big plus side: there is no need ┬áfor a babysitter. Win win. čÖé

One week after new year I had a great weekend in Dresden seeing my parents, my sister and her little family and my cousins. We met up for a lovely rustic dinner and had to catch up on all the news from everyone.

The following two weeks brought us two birthdays to celebrate. Best occasion to meet family and friends and have a fantastic time together.

And between all these festivities I completed the tablet sleeve for Basti and even put it into my shop because of the good responses I received.

tablet sleeve for Basti

I even made two more. One which I sold already and one for a very special friend of mine. čśë

two more sleeves

Another sewing project was the following cape for Lilly’s group at day nursery. It’s sooo red and really loved by the kids in the group. Mission accomplished! čÖé

One more thing happened this January… there is finally some SNOW. Yeahy!!

ein neues Jahr / a new year

We wish you a happy and creative year 2012.

As one could see, we didn’t get around to write anything during December since there was soo much going on. At first our small family all got sick , then MadeForRain started surprisingly quick and at last there were all the christmas presents of course. I’m glad we decided to do it the secret Santa way in Basti’s family this year, thus everyone is only responsible for one present.

Year after year more and more a need grew in me, to give presents which cannot just be purchased anywhere. Therefor I only made presents which were sewn by myself with lots of love and thought.

Here a few of them:

First of all the knit and crochet needle purse for the girlfriend of my pa-in-law. She recently rediscovered crocheting.

A small book for my nice’s hair clips. She’s got soo many, it’s┬áunbelievable.

A tools belt for my little nephew. His grandma got him some super tools and these have to be put somewhere.

And last but not least a new cover for Basti’s new Nook tablet, of which he is quite proud of. It’s not quite ready yet. Basti suggested a stronger front cover and rubber band in the corners to better fasten the pad.

Schade eigentlich.

I’m very satisfied with the presents I made, but I think next year will be a bit different. It was┬ánoticeable┬áthat not everyone is as happy as I wished for about┬áself-made┬ápresents. It’s a shame really.

alle 7 Sachen / all 7 things

Incited by┬áFrau Liebe, from time to time I will show 7 things I have done with my own hands on one day – no matter if for 5 minutes or several hours.

First of all, breakfast… with fresh chive sown and harvested by us.

We made our first trip to the Botanische Anlage not far away from our house. Thereby we discovered a very nice cafe in the green house, with self made cakes and soups and lovely waiters.

We need to make space in our shelfs again, thus did a big session of sorting out old books, DVDs and Games. Hopefully our local library will take some of these as a donation. To throw books in the trash, just feels wrong.

After a long photo shooting session, two new products made their way into the shop.

1. Advent

Lighted the 1st candle of the new Advent wreath and ate yummy German lebkuchen.

┬á… also ran an die Arbeit. čÖé

Finally started with the first few small bags for the Advent calendar. I know it is late, but there are still 3 days left. … go, go, go …

Caressed Lilly into sleep in our dark bed room. A cold and new back teeth do not go well together. …┬áunfortunately this shows in the nights. Yawn!!!
